London Schools Excellence Fund: MFL Project

Exciting news! RGTSA has successfully bid for £213k to raise participation rates and performance in MFL at Key Stages 3, 4 & 5.

Working closely with our HEI partners, the University of Greenwich and Goldsmiths, University of London, we will be delivering a CPD programme for MFL subject leaders staring in the summer term 2014 and continuing throughout the next academic year. Subject leader sessions will be followed up with CPD sessions for teachers hosted at St Ursula’s or Woolwich Polytechnic.

The courses will emphasise the relationship between theory and practice in teaching MFL but will be immensely practical and supportive. Most of the supply cover for the courses will be provided for the ten schools which have signed up and best practice from all departments will be shared.

Pupil voice surveys will ensure pupils attitudes to language learning are addressed and subject leaders and teachers will learn new strategies and have access to a wide range of resources.

The first 5 sessions will be focused on KS3 & 4 focusing primarily on French but applicable to all MFL, whilst the last 3 sessions will focus on KS5. There will be an online portal for teachers to share resources and share ideas. Teachers will take part in peer observation and peer to peer support.

In the summer term 2015, we will celebrate the learning at a high profile conference with prestigious key note speakers, followed by 2 summer schools: one for pupils KS2/3 and one for post-16.

Pupil progress will be monitored and the impact of the project will be externally evaluated.

Ten schools have signed up: but all schools can be involved in some way; and we are actively looking for KS5 schools to join the project when it moves into the post-16 phase.

The overall aim is to create a cultural, positive shift in pupil attitudes to learning MFL.

The launch twilight will take place on 8 May, 4.30pm at the PDC in Eltham.

Please contact Maggie Croxford at maggie.croxford@royalgreenwich.gov.uk if you did not sign up and would like to be involved.
